UBA Appoints Emmanuel N. Nnorom as New Group Chairman, Succeeds Tony Elumelu
United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc has appointed Emmanuel N. Nnorom as its new Group Chairman, succeeding Tony Elumelu, who retired from the bank’s board after reaching the 12-year maximum tenure for non-executive directors and bank chairmen.
Nnorom officially assumed office as Group Chairman on August 21, 2026. He brings more than four decades of experience in banking, accounting, auditing, corporate governance and business management.
His relationship with UBA spans more than eight years in senior leadership positions. He previously served as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of UBA Africa, where he led the Group’s operations across 18 African countries.
Nnorom also served as UBA’s Group Chief Operating Officer and Group Chief Financial Officer. His other responsibilities included serving as Executive Director for Finance, Risk Management and the Group Executive Office.
He joined the UBA Board as a Non-Executive Director in 2024.
Emmanuel Nnorom’s Professional Background
Nnorom is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and holds an honorary membership or fellowship of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN).
He is also an alumnus of Templeton College, University of Oxford, now Saïd Business School, where he completed executive leadership and management programmes.
Outside UBA, Nnorom has held senior positions at Heirs Holdings and Transnational Corporation of Nigeria (Transcorp) Plc.
He served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Heirs Holdings, a pan-African investment company with interests in power, financial services, oil and gas, and hospitality.
He was also President and CEO of Transcorp, overseeing its diversified portfolio, which includes Transcorp Power, Transcorp Hilton and Transcorp Energy.
Nnorom currently chairs the boards of Afriland Properties Plc and Transcorp Power Plc. He previously served as Chairman of Transcorp Hotels Plc.
Nnorom Takes Over From Tony Elumelu
Nnorom succeeds Tony Elumelu, who stepped down from the UBA Board after completing the maximum 12-year tenure permitted under Central Bank of Nigeria regulations for non-executive directors and bank chairmen.
Elumelu remains Chairman of Heirs Holdings and Transcorp and is the founder of the Tony Elumelu Foundation.
Nnorom takes charge of UBA as the banking group continues its operations across Africa and international financial centres. UBA serves more than 50 million customers across 20 African countries and has international operations in New York, London, Paris and Dubai.
