KCB Bank to Fund Solar, Biogas and Clean Energy Projects at Public Universities

KCB Bank Kenya has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with public universities to facilitate financing for cleaner, more efficient and climate-resilient campus infrastructure.

The agreement will enable public universities to access structured asset-based financing for projects such as solar power systems, energy efficiency improvements, clean cooking technologies, waste management, biogas systems, solar water heating and rainwater harvesting.

The financing framework is intended to help universities reduce energy and other operating costs while improving the efficiency of their use of resources and strengthening their ability to withstand climate-related challenges.

Financing Green Infrastructure

Under the agreement, KCB Bank Kenya will facilitate financing for the installation, maintenance and optimisation of green infrastructure at participating public universities.

Solar energy will be a key area of investment, with universities able to use solar systems to supplement or replace electricity from the national grid. The programme will also support clean cooking technologies, including LPG, biogas and steam systems, as institutions move away from traditional firewood and other biomass fuels.

Other projects covered by the framework include energy audits, solar water heating, waste-to-energy biogas systems and rainwater harvesting. The financing model is structured around the assets being installed, allowing universities to fund the upfront cost of infrastructure while spreading the cost of the projects over time.

How the Green Financing Agreement Will Work

The State Department for Higher Education and Research, KCB Bank Kenya and individual public universities will have different roles in implementing the programme.

The State Department will provide government oversight and align the initiative with Kenya’s climate action and green economy priorities. It will also coordinate with university administrations and vice-chancellors to facilitate the implementation of the projects.

The department will further support the integration of the infrastructure upgrades into academic programmes, creating opportunities for students to gain practical exposure to areas such as renewable energy and related technical fields.

KCB will serve as the financing partner, facilitating structured asset-based financing for the green infrastructure.

The bank will also support energy audits and technical site assessments to determine the energy requirements of individual campuses. Financing will cover the acquisition, installation and maintenance of eligible infrastructure.

Public universities will provide access to their facilities and relevant electricity consumption information to support assessments and the design of projects suited to individual campuses.

The universities will also host the infrastructure and provide an environment where students and staff can gain practical experience with renewable energy and resource-efficiency systems.

Reducing University Operating Costs

A key objective of the programme is to help public universities reduce the cost of running their campuses. Solar power can reduce dependence on electricity supplied through the national grid, while energy-efficiency measures can lower overall consumption.

Solar water heating and other resource-management systems are also expected to reduce the amount of energy and water required for university operations.

The clean cooking component targets university kitchens and other facilities that rely on traditional biomass fuels. The shift to LPG, biogas and steam systems is expected to reduce reliance on firewood while addressing indoor air pollution associated with traditional cooking methods.

Green Campuses as Training Grounds

The infrastructure projects will also provide opportunities for students to gain practical experience with technologies being installed on their campuses.

Universities can use the projects as living laboratories where students and technical staff interact with solar energy, biogas, water harvesting and other resource-efficiency systems. This will allow campus infrastructure to support both day-to-day operations and practical learning in areas related to renewable energy and green technologies.

The State Department for Higher Education and Research will support the integration of these upgrades into the academic system, including pathways for technical and vocational skills development.
