How to Set Up the Safaricom VybCall Feature on Your Phone
Safaricom PLC has rolled out Safaricom VybCall, a new service that changes how users experience phone calls. Launched on October 8, 2025, in partnership with Huawei, the platform upgrades the traditional Skiza tune by replacing audio with short 15–30 second videos that play while a caller waits for the recipient to pick up.
This innovation blends personalization, entertainment, and mobile advertising opportunities, creating a new experience for the over 50 million users on the Safaricom network.
The VybCall setup is quick and accessible, and the feature opens earning opportunities for creators, similar to Skiza’s revenue model. It is Africa’s first Video Ring Back Tone (VRBT) service.
How the Safaricom VybCall Feature Works
The Safaricom VybCall feature uses Safaricom’s 4G VoLTE network to stream short videos during incoming calls. Callers see the selected video instead of hearing a ringtone. Users can choose from a video library or upload their own clips. Businesses can use the feature to display ads or branded videos, turning every incoming call into an engagement moment.
The service draws inspiration from China Mobile’s VRBT model, which has more than 1 billion users and generates over $142 billion annually.
VybCall Compatible Devices and Requirements
Before proceeding with the Safaricom VybCall activation, it’s important to confirm device compatibility. The feature is currently supported on Android devices only, including:
-
Safaricom Neon series (entire lineup)
-
Selected Samsung Galaxy A-series models
-
Selected OPPO A-series models
-
Xiaomi Redmi A series
Vivo devices will be supported in Q2 2026. iPhones and other Android models are not yet eligible. To check whether your phone is supported, dial *860#.
Minimum requirements for the VybCall setup include:
-
An active Safaricom SIM with 4G/VoLTE enabled (dial *100# > Self-service > 4 > 3 > 1).
-
The latest version of the MySafaricom App from Google Play.
-
Stable 4G data or airtime for activation and streaming.
Both the caller and the recipient must have compatible devices for full video playback. If not, the call defaults to the standard Skiza audio tone.

This allows both casual users and businesses to customize their call experiences based on their preferences and budget.
Safaricom VybCall Troubleshooting Tips
If the service doesn’t work as expected, try the following solutions:
-
No video playback: Check your 4G signal and ensure VoLTE is enabled. Restart your phone or toggle Airplane mode.
-
App not responding: Clear the cache or reinstall the MySafaricom App. Using Safaricom mobile data instead of Wi-Fi may help during setup.
-
Upload failures: Ensure the file is in MP4 format, under 30 seconds, and below 5MB. Avoid copyrighted material.
-
Other issues: Dial 100 for customer care or use Zuri on the MySafaricom App.
