KBA Expands Membership With Admission of Sumac Microfinance Bank
The Kenya Bankers Association (KBA) has admitted Sumac Microfinance Bank Ltd as a member, bringing the umbrella body’s membership to 47 financial institutions.
The association said Sumac’s admission will support collaboration and collective engagement across Kenya’s banking industry.
KBA is the umbrella organisation and advocacy body for financial institutions licensed by the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK). The association works with policymakers, regulators and other stakeholders on policies and initiatives aimed at expanding access to finance and supporting economic activity, business growth and job creation.
Sumac Joins Kenya Bankers Association
KBA said Sumac Microfinance Bank’s membership will contribute to industry efforts aimed at advancing a stable, inclusive and innovative financial sector.
“We look forward to working with Sumac Microfinance Bank Ltd and other members on issues critical to the economy’s growth and development,” KBA said.
The association said it exists to expand access to credit for households and businesses by championing policies and initiatives that support economic activity, business growth and job creation.
KBA also works with policymakers, regulators and other stakeholders to shape policies and initiatives affecting the banking sector, including measures to expand access to finance and support economic development.
KBA Membership Reaches 47 Institutions
The admission of Sumac Microfinance Bank takes KBA’s membership to 47 institutions. The association represents commercial banks in Kenya alongside approved microfinance institutions.
Its members include banks such as Absa Bank Kenya, Co-operative Bank and Access Bank, as well as microfinance institutions including Caritas Microfinance Bank and Sumac Microfinance Bank.
KBA member institutions have combined assets exceeding KSh7.7 trillion.
The association provides a platform through which its members engage collectively on policy, regulation and other issues affecting the financial services industry.
Services And Initiatives Supported By KBA
KBA’s activities include policy advocacy, financial sector initiatives, credit information sharing, payments infrastructure and capacity building.
The association provides members with a collective platform for engagement on national fiscal policies, banking laws and CBK regulations.
KBA also supports industry-wide financial technology initiatives, including PesaLink, a peer-to-peer digital payments platform.
Through the Kenya Credit Information Sharing Initiative, the association supports credit information sharing and risk mitigation within the financial sector.
KBA also operates the Banking Centre for Sustainable Finance and Enterprise, which provides technical training frameworks for financial sector participants.
The association further promotes financial literacy through resources such as the Total Cost of Credit calculator.
KBA Role In Kenya’s Banking Sector
KBA works with government agencies, regulators and other stakeholders on initiatives aimed at expanding credit access to households and micro, small and medium-sized enterprises.
The association also manages the operations of the Nairobi Automated Clearing House alongside the Central Bank of Kenya, according to the information provided.
Its activities include supporting financial innovation and national payment system developments, including the Real Time Gross Settlement System (RTGS).
The association also provides consumer-focused resources aimed at improving understanding of financial products and their costs.
