How the New Airtel Bizna Wallet Works for Small Businesses in Kenya
Airtel Money Kenya has launched the Bizna Wallet, a dedicated digital sub-wallet designed to help micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) separate business income from personal finances while accessing business-focused payment and cash flow management tools.
Launched in Nairobi by Airtel Money Kenya Acting Managing Director Michael Bonke, the service is targeted at Kenya’s informal business sector, including kiosk owners, market traders, boda riders, matatu operators, and other entrepreneurs who rely on mobile money for daily transactions.
The Bizna Wallet is linked directly to an existing Airtel Money account, enabling users to manage business transactions through a separate wallet without opening a new account.
How the Bizna Wallet Works
Existing Airtel Money customers can activate the Bizna Wallet without submitting additional registration documents or purchasing new hardware.
To activate the service, users dial *334# on their Airtel line and select the Bizna Wallet option from the menu. The wallet can also be registered and managed through the My Airtel App.
Once activated, the Bizna Wallet functions as a ring-fenced business account connected to the user’s primary Airtel Money wallet.
Merchants can transfer funds between their personal Airtel Money wallet and the Bizna Wallet through the USSD menu or the My Airtel App. Every transfer requires PIN verification, while transfers between the two wallets are free of charge.
Separating Business and Personal Money
The primary feature of the Bizna Wallet is the separation of business income from personal funds.
Business payments received through the Bizna Wallet remain in a dedicated balance, allowing merchants to distinguish business revenue from household spending while continuing to use the same Airtel Money account.
The wallet also provides access to sales monitoring tools and mini statements, enabling users to track business transactions and monitor cash flow directly from their mobile phones.
Receiving Payments across Different Networks
The Bizna Wallet allows merchants to receive payments from customers using other mobile money platforms as well as commercial banks.
Customers making payments into a Bizna Wallet can send amounts of up to KSh 250,000 without paying transaction charges.
Protection against Unauthorized Payment Reversals
The Bizna Wallet introduces merchant protection against unauthorized payment reversals after a completed transaction.
Once payment has been successfully received, customers cannot unilaterally reverse the transaction. Any disputed payments are instead handled through Airtel Money Kenya’s customer care verification process.
Transaction Limits
The Bizna Wallet operates within transaction limits authorized by the Central Bank of Kenya. Users can transact up to KSh 500,000 per day and hold a maximum wallet balance of KSh 500,000.
The maximum value for a single transaction is KSh 250,000, while customers paying a Bizna Wallet merchant can make payments up to that amount without incurring transaction fees.
Rudishiwa Cashback Programme Updated
Alongside the Bizna Wallet launch, Airtel Money Kenya has updated its Rudishiwa cashback programme. Qualifying customers now receive cashback as real cash credited into a dedicated Cashback Wallet instead of airtime.
The programme refunds 50% of transaction charges for eligible transactions valued at KSh 101 and above, covering bill payments, peer-to-peer transfers, transfers to other mobile money networks, and bank transfers.
