Ethiopia’s Central Bank Appoints Top Executives to Boost Market and Tech Operations
Ethiopia’s Central Bank has appointed Weynshet Zeberga as Chief Markets & Operations Officer and Robel Tesfaye as Chief Technology Officer, filling two execution-critical roles as the country advances financial sector reforms.
The appointments take effect immediately and aim to strengthen the bank’s operational core, including market operations, liquidity management, and digital infrastructure.
Weynshet Zeberga, a decade-long NBE veteran, most recently served as Director of the Monetary and Financial Analysis Directorate.
Her career progression, from assistant research officer to leadership roles in financial stability, macroeconomic policy, and financial inclusion positions her to link research-driven policy with day-to-day market execution.
Her mandate includes managing open market operations, overseeing foreign exchange market development, and administering Ethiopia’s international reserves.
Robel Tesfaye joins from the Ethiopian Customs Commission, where he led the Electronic Single Window (ESW) program and served as Chief Information Officer. Previously, he was Chief Enterprise Architect at the Information Network Security Agency.
As NBE’s CTO, Tesfaye will drive the bank’s digital transformation, modernize payment systems under the National Digital Payments Strategy 2026–2030, and implement enterprise-grade infrastructure and security frameworks.
The appointments follow the September 2025 appointment of Dr. Eyob Tekalign Tolina as NBE Governor and come amid sweeping reforms, including market liberalization under the Banking Business Proclamation No. 1360/2025, modernization of foreign exchange controls, and the launch of an Automated Interbank Foreign Exchange Trading Platform.
The National Bank of Ethiopia said the creation of the new executive roles is intended to speed the bank’s shift toward a market-based monetary system and upgraded digital infrastructure.
Weynshet Zeberga’s office will focus on monetary policy execution, foreign exchange market oversight, reserve management, and market supervision.
Meanwhile, Robel Tesfaye will spearhead technology initiatives, including real-time settlement systems, AI and blockchain integration, fintech partnerships, and IT governance aligned with Basel II/III standards.
