CBK Licenses 27 New Digital Credit Providers
The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has announced the licensing of 27 new digital credit providers (DCPs), bringing the number of licensed DCPs in Kenya to 153. The approvals were granted under Section 59(2) of the CBK Act, following the review of applications that began in March 2022.
According to CBK, more than 700 applications have been received from firms seeking to operate as digital lenders. The review process has focused on business models, consumer protection measures, and the fitness and propriety of proposed shareholders, directors, and senior management.
The regulator noted that the licensing framework is designed to ensure compliance with the law and safeguard customer interests.
The newly approved lenders expand the pool of digital loan providers that offer products such as education loans, development loans, short-term personal loans, asset financing, and business loans.
As of June 2025, licensed DCPs in Kenya had issued 5.5 million loans valued at KSh76.8 billion, largely through mobile and USSD-based platforms.
