Loan Apps for First Time Borrowers in Kenya

Best Loan Apps for First Time Borrowers in Kenya

Digital credit has become the main source of emergency financing for many Kenyans in 2026, overtaking informal borrowing channels such as family networks and chamas.

Monthly borrowing through digital lending platforms now exceeds KSh 13 billion. About 5.5 million active borrowers access loans each month from roughly 126 licensed digital lenders.

The share of consumers using digital credit providers has risen to about 91%, up from 87% a year earlier. Most of the borrowing is directed toward day-to-day needs, including food and utility bills, rather than long-term investment or business use.

Across most loan apps for first time borrowers in Kenya, approval decisions are increasingly driven by behavioral data rather than traditional credit scores. Factors such as mobile money transaction frequency, repayment consistency on small loans, and device usage patterns play a central role.

This approach has allowed financial inclusion to expand among users who may not have formal banking records. However, initial loan amounts remain small until repayment history is established.

  • Tala Loan App

Tala remains one of the most widely used loan apps for first time borrowers in Kenya, particularly due to its AI-driven credit scoring model. The platform does not require a formal credit history, instead analyzing mobile data and transaction patterns to determine eligibility.

New users typically receive loan limits starting from about KSh 1,000, which can increase to around KSh 50,000 with consistent repayment. Loan approval is often completed within minutes, with funds disbursed directly to M-Pesa.

Tala operates a personal line of credit system, allowing users to borrow multiple times without reapplying once their account is active. Repayment periods can extend up to 120 days, with interest charged daily on the borrowed amount. A one-time late fee applies on overdue balances, depending on the repayment status.

For many beginners, Tala is often positioned among the most accessible loan apps for first time borrowers due to its low entry barrier and quick disbursement process.

  • Branch Loan App

Branch offers another entry point for first time borrowers in Kenya, especially those without strong credit profiles.

Loan limits typically range from KSh 500 to KSh 70,000 for new users, with higher limits unlocked over time based on repayment history. The platform uses more than 2,000 data points from a user’s phone to assess risk and determine loan offers.

Branch provides access through both its mobile app and USSD functionality, making it usable on basic smartphones. Funds can be disbursed to a Branch wallet, bank account, or mobile money services such as M-Pesa.

Interest rates vary depending on borrower risk profiles, generally ranging between 2% and 18% per month. Loan repayment terms can extend from about 62 days to one year, giving users flexibility in managing repayment schedules.

  • Zenka Loan App

Zenka is often used by new borrowers in Kenya due to its introductory interest-free offers.

First-time users may qualify for small loans starting around KSh 500 to KSh 30,000. In some cases, the initial loan is offered at 0% interest if repaid within the agreed period, making it a low-cost entry point into digital credit.

Subsequent loans carry interest rates that vary based on repayment history and loan duration. Zenka’s repayment window typically runs up to 61 days, with costs ranging depending on borrower risk assessment.

Loan approval and disbursement are typically completed within minutes, with funds sent directly to the borrower’s mobile money account.
