All You Need to Know about the Kwaata Sente Loan Service by Centenary Bank, Airtel Money
A new digital lending product is aiming to close a longstanding gap in Uganda’s financial system by putting short-term microloans directly into the hands of mobile phone users who have never set foot in a bank.
Kwaata Sente, launched as a joint partnership between Centenary Bank, Airtel Money Uganda and licensed credit reference bureau gnuGrid CRB, offers collateral-free loans ranging from 10,000 to 500,000 Ugandan shillings (roughly $2.70 to $135).
The service is designed specifically for everyday users, such as market vendors, small-scale farmers, informal laborers and others without traditional bank accounts, and operates entirely through mobile devices with no paperwork, no internet connection and no branch visits required.
How the Partnership Works
Kwaata Sente rests on a clear three-way division of labor:
- Centenary Bank supplies the capital. Borrowers do not need an existing Centenary account to qualify.
- Airtel Money Uganda provides the customer-facing infrastructure. Users access the service via a simple USSD shortcode, receive funds instantly in their mobile wallet, and repay the same way.
- gnuGrid CRB handles credit assessment. Instead of traditional collateral or formal employment records, the bureau evaluates an applicant’s mobile financial footprint — deposits, utility payments, cash withdrawals and overall transaction history — to generate an instant alternative credit score.
Key Features and Limits of Kwaata Sente
Loans are short-term by design. Borrowers can choose repayment periods of 7, 15, 21 or 30 days. The service charges a flat 10% fee on each loan. Users may make partial installment payments or repay the full amount in one go through their Airtel Money wallet.
Only one Kwaata Sente loan can be active at a time; any outstanding balance must be cleared before a new application is possible.
Importantly, the system does not automatically deduct funds when a user tops up airtime or receives mobile money, as every repayment must be manually authorized.
Who Qualifies for the Kwaata Sente Loan
Eligibility is straightforward. Applicants must be registered, active Airtel Money subscribers in Uganda, maintain a steady record of mobile money activity, and have no outstanding defaults on other digital credit facilities.
Once those baseline conditions are met, gnuGrid’s automated profiling determines the actual borrowing limit.
How to Apply for a Kwaata Sente Loan
The process is deliberately simple:
- Dial *185*8*5# on an Airtel line.
- Check the pre-approved limit displayed on the menu.
- Select the desired loan amount and repayment period.
- Confirm the details and enter the Airtel Money PIN.
- Funds appear instantly in the user’s mobile wallet.
Who the Service Is Built For
Kwaata Sente is aimed squarely at Uganda’s large informal economy. Market traders who need early-morning working capital to restock, farmers waiting for harvest proceeds, and workers facing sudden medical or school expenses are the primary intended users.
Because the Kwaata Sente loans carry a compressed repayment window and an upfront fee, the partners emphasize that the product is best used for immediate cash-flow needs or clear economic opportunities rather than long-term consumer borrowing. Timely or early repayment can increase a user’s future borrowing limit over time.
