Equity Bank emerged as the top winner at the 20th edition of the Think Business Banking Awards 2025, collecting a total of 16 accolades across diverse categories that spotlight innovation, financial literacy, SME banking, and sustainability.

The event, which ranks among Kenya’s most prestigious financial industry recognitions, saw Equity claim the top position in nine major categories.

These included Best Bank in SME Banking, Agriculture Financing, Asset Financing, Mortgage Financing, Financial Literacy Programs, Microfinance, Agency Banking, Sustainable Corporate Social Responsibility, and a Special Judges Award for Product Innovation.

Equity was also acknowledged as first runner-up in Product Marketing and secured second runner-up positions in Mobile Banking, Retail Banking, Trade Financing, Bank with the Lowest Tariff, and Best Bank in Tier 1.

Among the evening’s top individual honors, Equity Group Managing Director and CEO, Dr. James Mwangi, was named CEO of the Year, in recognition of his visionary leadership and commitment to inclusive finance.

This award adds to a growing list of global recognitions, including the Freedom of the City of London Award and the UNHCR Visionary Award, both honoring his efforts in using financial services to support displaced populations and underserved communities.

“I am truly honored to be named CEO of the Year, and I accept this recognition on behalf of the entire Equity team. It is their unwavering commitment, innovation, and relentless pursuit of excellence that continue to drive our impact and success. The awards we’ve received reflect not only our performance but our purpose: to create transformative financial solutions that empower individuals, businesses, and communities,” Dr. Mwangi stated while accepting the award.

“Equity has long been the home of MSMEs, and being recognized as the Best Bank in SME Banking is a powerful affirmation of our continued investment in this vital sector. We remain committed to walking alongside entrepreneurs, small and large, by providing the tools, knowledge, and financing they need to thrive.” he added.

The Think Business Banking Awards recognize institutions based on both quantitative and qualitative performance indicators, placing emphasis on customer value, innovation, and long-term sustainable impact.

This year’s theme, “Educate, Empower, Enrich: The Financial Literacy Promise,” closely aligned with Equity’s expansive programs that provide entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and digital training to individuals and MSMEs across Kenya and the region.
