Stanbic Bank Tanzania Commits TZS 20 Million to ECSA-HC Medical Camps in Tanzania and Malawi

Stanbic Bank Tanzania has committed TZS 20 million to support the East, Central and Southern Africa Health Community (ECSA-HC) Medical and Surgical Camps Initiative, a programme aimed at expanding access to specialist healthcare services for underserved communities in Tanzania and Malawi.

The partnership will facilitate the delivery of free medical and surgical camps in July 2026 at selected healthcare facilities in Arusha and Mtwara in Tanzania, as well as hospitals in Malawi, helping patients access life-changing treatment at no cost.

Free Specialist Services to Be Offered in Tanzania and Malawi

The medical camps will be hosted at Mount Meru Regional Referral Hospital in Arusha and Mtwara Regional Referral Hospital in Mtwara.

In Malawi, the initiative will cover Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, Zomba Central Hospital, Mzuzu Central Hospital, Kamuzu Central Hospital, and Nkhatabay District Hospital.

Specialists and fellows from ECSA Health Colleges will provide mentorship to local medical teams while conducting complex surgical procedures. Services scheduled under the initiative include neurosurgery, cardiothoracic surgery, orthopaedic procedures, as well as paediatric and general surgeries.

The programme is expected to help reduce surgical backlogs while improving access to highly specialised healthcare services that are often difficult for low-income patients to obtain.

Stanbic Bank Tanzania Extends Health and Community Investments

The latest commitment adds to Stanbic Bank Tanzania’s wider Corporate Social Investment (CSI) activities, which have seen the lender allocate more than TZS 230 million between 2025 and 2026 towards healthcare, education, environmental conservation and entrepreneurship programmes.

According to the bank, these initiatives have collectively reached more than two million Tanzanians through projects designed to improve healthcare access, strengthen learning environments and support livelihoods.

Among the healthcare initiatives supported by the bank is the AfyaCheck Campaign, which received TZS 100 million to finance a nationwide medical caravan offering free healthcare consultations, diagnostics and health screenings to vulnerable communities.

Stanbic Bank also donated medical supplies valued at TZS 18 million to Mirembe National Mental Health Hospital, Dodoma Regional Referral Hospital and Benjamin Mkapa Hospital.

The donation included delivery packs, surgical gloves, syringes and hospital linens aimed at supporting safe childbirth and improving healthcare delivery.

Education, Environmental and MSME Programmes

Beyond healthcare, Stanbic Bank Tanzania has invested in education infrastructure through initiatives such as the “Run for Binti” project implemented in partnership with Smile for Community.

The programme funded the construction of improved sanitation facilities at Ushirombo Secondary School to support menstrual hygiene management and reduce school absenteeism among girls.

The lender also donated 50 Bengal chairs to St. Jude School, benefiting more than 1,800 students, and supplied 100 desks to secondary schools in Mbeya to address classroom furniture shortages.

Environmental programmes supported by the bank include the planting and distribution of more than 50,000 fruit and shade trees around schools and communities.

Meanwhile, the Stanbic Biashara Incubator programme has reached nearly 5,000 micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), providing business support, financial literacy training and promoting clean-energy adoption.

Stanbic Marks 30 Years of Operations

Stanbic Bank Tanzania said the ECSA-HC partnership forms part of its efforts to contribute to inclusive development as it marks 30 years of operating in the country.

The bank’s Chief Executive Officer, Manzi Rwegasira, said Stanbic Bank Tanzania remains committed to creating meaningful impact in the communities it serves, adding that sustainable development is best achieved through collaboration, particularly in sectors such as healthcare.

Through its partnership with ECSA-HC, the bank aims to bring specialist medical services closer to underserved populations while supporting stronger healthcare systems across the region.
