Zenith Bank Founder Jim Ovia Retires After 36-Year Leadership, Mustafa Bello Appointed Chairman
Zenith Bank Plc has announced the retirement of Founder and Group Chairman Jim Ovia following the expiration of his tenure under Nigeria’s corporate governance rules.
The lender said in a notice issued in Lagos that Jim Ovia completed the mandatory 12-year tenure allowed for chairmen of financial holding companies, non-interest banks and payment service banks.
Jim Ovia, a preeminent Nigerian businessman and philanthropist, and widely regarded as the “Godfather of Banking” in Africa, exits after a 36-year leadership run spanning two decades as chief executive and 12 years as chairman.
The Board credited his tenure with shaping the bank’s strategic direction and governance framework, alongside strengthening its position in Nigeria’s financial sector.
From $4 Million Startup to Market Leader
Jim Ovia founded Zenith Bank in 1990 with approximately $4 million (₦20 million) at a time when Nigeria’s banking sector was undergoing liberalization. Zenith bank’s operations began in July 1990 in a repurposed residential building in Victoria Island, Lagos.
Jim Ovia leadership combined operational discipline with a focus on technology and infrastructure. Zenith became one of the first Nigerian banks to adopt digital banking channels, launching internet banking in 1999. The bank also invested in independent infrastructure to maintain service reliability.
Jim Ovia introduced standardized branch designs across the country, creating a uniform brand identity that was later replicated across Nigeria’s banking industry.
