Stanbic Bank Kenya and Kenya Breweries Limited (KBL) have joined forces in effort to support Kenya’s green economy. The two organizations have committed to planting one million trees over the next five years as part of the country’s ambitious goal to plant 15 billion trees by 2032.

The partnership will see both Stanbic Bank Kenya and Kenya Breweries Limited finance and support tree-planting activities and related environmental initiatives across Kenya. These efforts will focus on:

  • Restoring Kenya’s Landscapes: Rehabilitating degraded ecosystems and protecting vital water towers.
  • Empowering Communities: Providing training in regenerative agriculture, sustainable water practices, and alternative livelihoods to reduce pressure on natural resources.
  • Driving Sustainable Progress: Combining expertise to achieve a lasting environmental impact.

Beyond tree planting, this collaboration aims to create a legacy of environmental stewardship, empower local communities, and tackle climate change directly.

The partnership builds on Stanbic Bank’s continued commitment to sustainability, highlighted by their $122 million investment in green facilities in 2023. This initiative will further promote environmental responsibility through tree planting, regenerative agriculture, water conservation, and alternative livelihood programs across Kenyan communities.

Kenya Breweries Limited’s sustainability efforts, which include its “Spirit of Progress” strategy, align closely with the goals of the new partnership. The initiative kicked off with a tree-planting event, the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), and a tour of KBL’s Biomass Plant.

The partnership is led by Stanbic Bank Kenya’s CEO, Dr. Joshua Oigara, and KBL’s Managing Director, Mark Ocitti Ongom. Both organizations bring extensive environmental expertise, with KBL having already planted over 1.5 million trees through East African Breweries Limited (EABL) in the past decade.

Dr. Oigara emphasized the broader significance of the initiative: “Sustainability is at the heart of what we do. Planting 1 million trees is more than an environmental goal—it’s about livelihoods, resilience, and hope for future generations.”

Mark Ocitti Ongom added, “This partnership goes beyond numbers. It’s about building a resilient future for Kenya. With 1.5 million trees planted by KBL in the last decade, this new commitment demonstrates the transformative power of partnerships in addressing climate change.”

The initiative is set to create significant environmental and socioeconomic benefits, including job creation, carbon emission reduction, and the restoration of natural habitats. It also seeks to address critical environmental challenges, such as the protection of Kenya’s vital water towers and the promotion of sustainable development practices.
