The Kenya Bankers Association Catalyst Awards 2024 celebrated Kenya’s leading financial institutions for their outstanding contributions to sustainable development, innovation, and inclusivity.

Held annually, the awards recognize efforts in aligning business goals with the country’s economic, social, and environmental priorities.

In March 2015, Kenya’s banking industry adopted the Sustainable Finance Initiative (SFI) Guiding Principles to guide financial institutions in balancing business objectives with socio-environmental concerns and development priorities.

These principles, officially launched by Central Bank Governor Dr. Patrick Njoroge on December 1, 2015, are anchored on three main priorities: equipping the financial services sector to perform optimally in the area of comprehensive risk management; enhancing business practice, leadership and governance; and promoting industry growth and development by fostering a culture of innovation and inclusivity enabled by new technology.

The SFI Principles harmonize global best practices such as the Equator Principles, IFC Performance Standards, UNEP-FI Guidelines, ISO 26000:2010, and Kenya’s National Climate Change Policy.

These guidelines have become the foundation for recognizing financial sector players through the Kenya Bankers Association Catalyst Awards, first established in 2016.
