KCB Merchants To Now Accept Visa Payments via Smartphone
KCB Bank Kenya has introduced a new smartphone-based payment acceptance system after entering into a partnership with Visa. The arrangement enables merchants to accept Visa payments directly on their smartphones, creating an alternative to traditional point-of-sale (POS) machines.
The bank says the development aims to reduce costs for small businesses that have long struggled to adopt digital payments due to the high price of card payment terminals. With the new setup, smartphones are turned into payment acceptance devices, allowing traders to receive card payments wherever they operate across the country.
This is expected to support businesses that rely on mobility, such as delivery workers, informal traders, and service providers.
KCB explained that the rollout fits into its ongoing digital agenda to offer customers and merchants faster and more convenient payment options. The bank noted that millions of payment cards are issued every year, yet merchant acceptance has not kept pace because many traders cannot afford or maintain conventional POS devices.
Jane Isiaho, KCB Bank Kenya director of retail and business banking, said the collaboration provides a solution that expands access to digital payment channels through an everyday device.
In her remarks, she said the bank is simplifying access to payment acceptance, lowering operational expenses, and helping merchants serve customers more efficiently and securely.
“This collaboration with Visa brings to life a powerful solution that gives every merchant the ability to accept digital payments using just a smartphone. We’re simplifying access to payment acceptance, reducing operation al costs, and empowering merchants to serve customers faster and more securely.” she said.
The new smartphone-based acceptance system is expected to introduce more competitive options in Kenya’s payments market.
By removing the need for payment terminals, merchants gain a cheaper and more flexible tool for handling transactions, especially those operating in high-traffic or informal locations where traditional devices may be impractical.
KCB added that it will continue strengthening support systems to help merchants onboard quickly and resolve any operational issues as they adopt the new payment option. The bank emphasised that the focus is on ensuring smooth integration into daily business activities without disruptions.
Visa said the technology will be especially useful for traders who need portable, low-cost ways to accept payments wherever their customers are located.
